Season 2: Bahamas Berry Islands

Ourselves along with a few other boats departed Bimini and headed for Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Island chain. The passage across the Bahama Bank was much rougher than anticipated. With choppy sea state , the time across took longer than originally planned and we eventually decided to stop and anchor. The Thought was to try to get some sleep and continue on in the morning. However, this was a futile attempt as zero sleep was had that night. As soon as the sun came up , we continued on our way for a couple more hours until we made our way to the anchorage. After setting the hook, we celebrated our new spot with a pina coloda and fell straight to sleep.

The next morning, we couldn’t wait to explore around the island, so we lowered the dingy, packed our fishing gear and cameras, and headed straight for the nearby blue hole which was the first blue hole either of us has seen. So cool! After lunch on the beach, we explored around the island with the dingy to try our luck at fishing. Unfortunately, we only caught little tiny grouper which we had to throw back. Jerrod tried with the speargun, but once multiple bull sharks started showing up, we nixed that plan. We only stayed a couple of days here and never went into the town, which we regret. If we come this way again, we’ll try to spend a little more time here. It really is a beautiful spot.

Early in the morning during high tide, we pick up anchor and set our course toward Soldier Cay. After rounding the north tip of the island, its a short couple of hours to this incredible remote beach. There’s nothing here except for maybe a few other sailboats. It’s an ideal spot to disconnect from internet and social media and just enjoy being in nature. That is exactly what we did, explored the island, drank rum, swam in the water, and layed in the sand. It was perfect!

We would have loved to stay here at least a week, but the drawback to this anchorage is that it offers little to no protection from weather. So when the winds picked up to 25+ knots one morning, we decided to leave our paradise and head across the ————- towards Eleuthera.
