How We Afford to Travel

Soooo, how do we finance ourselves?

Is it….

A. We are trust fund kids….

B. We receive you tube/Patreon revenue….

C. We are illegal arms dealers…

NO! NO! and NO!

We are not trust fund kids ( that would be awesome though!) We have a very small following on you tube and no Patreon, so thats not a viable for us at this point. And we are way too non confrontational to make it in any type of criminal exploits!

So then how?

Spoiler Alert: We still work! ( I know, totally boring) . First of all we saved like crazy people ,living well below our means for a couple of years ( no cable, no vacations, cook at home, etc) . We had some equity in the house we sold, so that was a win. Currently, we live very cheaply on the boat ( no mortgage, no car note and associated insurances) Entertainment is usually free such as hiking, swimming, laying out on a remote beach. Also, we don’t spend a whole lot of time at marinas unless I’m fulfilling a contract at the moment. Overall, our monthly expenses are a fraction of what they were living on land.

But we still have to pay for some things such as food, boat maintainence/insurance, meeting friends at the bar, etc.

So in order to top off the cruising kitty when needed, I still work as a contract physical therapist by pausing our travels and completing 3 month contracts for hospitals. Jerrod works as a yacht broker which is difficult to do while traveling out of the country, but it has supplemented us at times. Overall, it took some getting used to not having a steady biweekly paycheck, but with the right planning and discipline , we found that it’s completely doable. We have met so many fellow cruisers who have found creative ways to finance their full time travels. especially if you’re internet savvy.
